Convergence-ready, for VoIP and more
The Ethernet Routing Switch 2500 series offers outstanding value as a convergence-ready edge switch. It delivers 802.3af standards-based Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) to support IP Telephony and Wireless LAN access points.
ERS 2500 models are available with or without PoE. As not all network devices require PoE, the ERS 2500 provides the right mix of PoE and non-PoE ports, so you don’t have to pay for power capacity that you’re never likely to use.
The ERS 2500 is an energy-efficient branch office or wiring closet edge solution that consumes 40 percent less energy than competing products. Resilient stacking provides a pay-as-you-grow solution that creates a single virtual switch for ease of configuration and management.
Additionally, the ERS 2500 family also uses the IEEE standard 802.1AB for auto discovery of devices such as IP phones. Each 802.1AB-supporting device learns the identification, configu¬ration and capabilities of neighboring devices, and provides these details to the network management system.

A stack of up to eight units can be created through the ERS 2500’s support of reliable stacking; via a stacking license or stack-enabled units. This allows the Ethernet Routing Switch 2500 series to scale up to 384 10/100 ports and 16 10/100/1000/ SFP combo ports in a single stack while maintaining its management simplicity. Furthermore, through sub-second failovers in case of switch or stacking cable failure, the Ethernet Routing Switch 2500 can offer customers a solution that allows them access to their applications and network resources any time.
Additionally, through the use of Cat5E Stacking Cables to interconnect the ERS 2500s, this intelligent solution enables its users to benefit from all of the resilience and scalability that comes from deploying a true stacking architecture yet maintains its cost-effectiveness and simplicity. To further complement the ERS 2500’s stacking architecture, Avaya also offers support for standards-based 802.3ad Link Aggregation as well as its own Multi-Link Trunking technology that allows users to cre¬ate the grouping of ports to form high-speed trunks/aggregations. Securing access to the network
The ERS 2500 offers high levels of security and flexibility, allowing only authorized personnel to gain access to a company’s LAN. Whether it is through use of an IEEE 802.1X-based EAP client or through a user/ device MAC address, network managers can ensure that only those who have successfully been authenticated against a RADIUS server have access to their specified resources.
For further flexibility, the ERS can support the authentication of multiple devices/users on a single port. For example, if a user’s PC connects into the network via an IP Phone (Figure 1), the PC and the IP Phone can be authenticated for authorized use to that port. Additionally, if your company frequently has visitors, support for a guest VLAN allows non-authenticated users to still use the network but to only have access to those resources that have been pre-specified for the guest VLAN such as Internet access.
The ERS 2500 series is managed through an enterprise-class Command Line Interface (CLI). The CLI provides a common industry look and feel to terminal commands, helping to reduce training and operational costs. Additionally, ERS 2500 series switches can be easily managed and configured using Device Manager or web-based management graphical user interfaces.
Secure management of the switch occurs through features such as Secure Shell (SSHv2) for encrypted telnet management access using an SSH client, via Device Manager using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMPv3) or using HTTPS/SSL secure web management. Additionally, an IP manager list can be used to specify which management stations can access the switch by specifying up to 10 authorized management station IP Addresses. Support for backing up and restoring an ASCII Configuration file provides the network administrator with the ability to quickly deploy the same configuration file among various switches as well as to maintain a backup of the switch configuration for future use – thus providing a solution that is simple to manage and maintain.
All ERS 2500 switches offer a lifetime warranty. An Avaya product hardware warranty is supported for as long as the original end user continues to own or use the product, including fan and power supply. In the event of a discontinuance of product manufacture, the Avaya warranty support is limited to five (5) years from the announcement of discontinuance.

Through support for standards-based Power-over-Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af PoE), power can be delivered to IP phones, wireless access points, networked CCTV cameras and other powered devices. This eliminates the need to have separate power supplies for each unit, thereby reducing cabling and management costs when there are adds, moves or changes. Additionally, with Avaya’s auto-discovery and configuration capability (ADAC), the ERS 4500 can automatically configure the switch to apply the correct Quality-of-Service (QoS) and VLAN settings, making mass IP phone deployments quick and easy. Standards-based 802.1AB auto-discovery can also be used for non-Avaya devices.
With Automatic QoS, an Ethernet Routing Switch 4500 supporting certain Avaya Unified Communications solutions automatically recognizes the special, private Differentiated Service Code Point (DSCP) values used by these applications and optimizes the management of egress queues. Withoutthis automated functionality, operators would need to have detailed knowledge of how QoS works, and also the private DSCP values, to enable manual configuration for optimized queue usage. This feature can help ensure that the process is automated and optimized, and protects against mis-configuration.

Intelligent bi-directional traffic flows between switches, can help ensure that the most efficient paths are used for traffic forwarding. Added to this, the ability to distribute trunks or aggregations across different units in the stack can ensure that even in the unlikely event of a switch or link failure, traffic continues to flow virtually uninterrupted for the remaining units in the stack.
For seamless scalability, the ERS 4500 can deliver up to 400 ports, meeting almost any wiring closet requirements of scalability and port speed flexibility, allowing the network infrastructure to grow as the business requirements change.

Advanced security services also enable the ERS 4500 to actively protect the network against malicious network attacks by protecting DHCP services (DHCP snooping), verifying and filtering ARP traffic via in-hardware processing (Dynamic ARP inspection), restricting IP traffic to registered end devices (IP Source Guard) as well as controlling the flow of Spanning Tree BPDUs within the network (BPDU Filtering).
The ERS 4500 supports advanced packet classification and deep packet filtering of up to 128 bytes. These powerful filtering capabilities can block unwanted network traffic while ensuring that mission-critical traffic is forwarded with minimum delay.
Secure and simplified network management
Avaya’s Ethernet Switch software is supported on all ERS 4500 models delivering simplified network operations and management by having a single image operate on any mixture of models in a stack. This eliminates the need to worry about different software versions and capabilities on different products. The software image needs only to be loaded to the base unit of the stack, which automatically loads it to other switches. Even as switches are added to an existing stack, the ERS 4500 software will help to that the new switch diagnostics and software are appropriately upgraded to the software running on the stack.
The on-board USB port enables network administrators to quickly and easily upload or download a configuration file via a USB stick. This allows the same configuration to either be deployed across several switches, making configuration of new switches seamless or serving as a backup in case a switch were to fail. The USB port also allows for quick upload of new software images or quick staging of new units through a simplified configuration capability.
For added security, both the USB and consoles ports can be locked to prevent unauthorized intrusion.
The ERS 4500 supports secure management through access control lists, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMPv3), Secure Shell (SSHv2), and RADIUS and TACACS+ authentication when connecting to the switch or stack.
The ERS 4500 can be managed through a Command Line Interface (CLI), which provides a common industry look and feel to CLI commands, helping to reduce training and operational costs. The ERS 4500 also provides GUI-based management via its Device Manager application and web-based interfaces for ease of use.
Redundant power support
Adding Avaya’s Redundant Power Supply 15 (RPS 15) allows the ERS 4500 to deliver the stable, redundant power support crucial for today’s high-availability, mission-critical environments. The RPS 15 chassis can support up to three 600-watt power supply modules. Each module can provide redundant power support to one ERS 4500 PoE switch or up to four non-PoE models.1
Deployments in converged networks are greatly simplified through dynamic power management of the PoE ports, with the load sharing and redundant power offered by Avaya’s RPS 15. Combined, these featuresare designed to allow that devices requiring PoE can be added to the network without power ever becoming an issue.

Up to eight Ethernet Routing Switch 5000 units can form a resilient Stacked solution, manageable as a single entity, of up to 400 ports, with maximized uptime even if an individual Switch within the Stack should fail.
Scalable, resilient and flexible Ethernet Switching
Recognizing that networking requirements vary from business to business – with differing needs at the Edge, Core and Distribution layer, Avaya offers the highly flexible Ethernet Routing Switch 5000 Series (ERS 5000); encompassing the original 5500 models and the new 5600 models, combining to offer a versatile portfolio of ten models. This provides Enterprises the ability to choose the model that best fits their networking requirements (see table below for details). The ERS 5000 Series features 100% cross-product stacking compatibility.
The original ERS 5500 models feature a stacking capacity of 80 Gbps per Switch and up to 640 Gbps for a full Stack of eight Switches, and the new ERS 5600 models introduce an enhanced stacking capacity of 144 Gbps per Switch and 1.152 Tbps for a full Stack. This is unprecedented in the industry and ensures optimal performance for delay-sensitive application traffic traversing the Stack.
ERS 5600 Switches can be Stacked with one another or with any Ethernet Routing Switch 5500 unit, and when connected to an adjacent ERS 5500, the ERS 5600 automatically adjusts to the ERS 5500’s stacking bandwidth of 80 Gbps. This enhanced flexibility provides the opportunity to mix and match port configurations based on operations needs, while preserving existing ERS 5500 investments.
ERS 5000 models come with two in-built auto-sensing stacking connections — implementing sophisticated queuing — for simple, cost-effective and efficient stacking. This design frees uplink ports for dedicated connectivity to the backbone. The ERS 5000’s high-performance architecture promotes optimized throughput across ports, uplinks and the virtual backplane.
AVAYA’S INNOVATIVE, RESILIENT 'STACKABLE CHASSIS' ARCHITECTURE

• Ease of growth/management: Extending capacity is easy; simply cable a new unit into the Stack, and the Stack configuration is automatically updated. The Stack acts as a single entity that can be managed via a single IP Address.
• Scalable performance: The high performance design of Avaya’s Stackable Switches along with their high-speed stack connections (up to 144 Gbps per Switch/1.152 Tbps per Stack) helps to ensure that the Stack scales proportionally as each new unit is added.
• Optimal path forwarding: A bidirectional, multi-path forwarding algorithm between Switches can ensure that the shortest, most optimal path is chosen for each flow of traffic. This design offers a clear performance advantage over the basic logical ring or token approaches used by other vendors.
• No single point-of-failure: Stack operation is unaffected by the failure of any unit in the Stack. Each unit’s independent switching fabric along with distributed, redundant power ensures continuous operation of the Stack. Individual Stack units can easily be replaced — i.e., a ‘virtual hot-swap’ capability — without impacting Stack operations (a feature known as ‘Auto-Unit Replacement’).
• Switch Clustering: Switch Clustering (based on Avaya’s SMLT technology) can be enabled on the ERS 5000 Series to enhance overall resiliency of the Stack solution, providing load-balancing and sub-second failover.

Ethernet Routing Switch 5000 deployment scenarios
The ERS 5000 Series is a flexible solution that can be deployed in a variety of Enterprise environments. These include:
High-density Wiring Closet
With its non-blocking design, high-density GbE and integrated 10GbE port options, the Ethernet Routing Switch 5000 Series is perfectly suited to providing the high-performance and highly available connectivity solution in the Wiring Closet. Up to eight ERS 5000 Switches can be combined into a single Stack with each ERS 5600 unit providing two 10GbE XFP ports for high-capacity uplinks to the Core or Aggregation layers of the network. ERS 5698 models provide even greater cost, space and energy efficiency with their ultra-dense Gigabit-to-the-Desktop capacity and the added flexibility of up to 6 SFP ports per Switch for long-reach fiber optic connections. With the ability to support Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) across all its ports, the ERS 5000 Series is an effective and flexible Wiring Closet/Edge solution in support of desktop and powered devices.
High-performance Data Center Edge
The high-performance, low-latency and high-availability requirements of the modern Data Center make the ERS 5000 Series a perfect solution for Server access and consolidation. By utilizing Avaya’s innovative ‘Horizontal Stacking’ capability – a Switch at the top of each Server rack, Stacked ‘Horizontally’ – the ERS 5000 Series can support cost-effective, high-density Server connections. Up to 400 Gigabit ports and multiple 10GbE uplinks per Stack can be deployed in this manner.
Avaya’s Switch Cluster solution can further enhance overall resiliency through the addition of a second Horizontally-Stacked ‘Top-of-Rack’ series of Switches. Connected Servers can then be ‘dual-homed’ to separate Stacks of ERS 5000 Switches, which in turn appear as a single, logical Switch to the rest of the network. This enables active-active connections, load-balancing and sub-second failover across the Stacks. These features make the ERS 5000 Series a truly cost-effective Data Center solution that combines always-on resiliency with high-performance connectivity.
Highly scalable small Core
The ERS 5000 Series can also serve as a high-performing, feature-rich small Core solution. With high-density 10GbE and SFP ports (up to 64 10GbE and 192 SFP ports per Stack), the ERS 5530-24TFD and 5632FD models are particularly well-suited to small Core applications. Coupled with dynamic routing protocol support (RIP/ OSPF) – and field-replaceable, redundant power in the 5600 models — the ERS 5000 Series can provide low-cost, resilient small Core solutions.
The ERS 5000 Series can further act as a Switch Cluster supporting other ERS 2500, 4500 or third-party Access Switches (see Figure 2) using Avaya’s Switch Clustering technology (SMLT). ERS 5000s in this configuration can provide up to 800 ports and over 2.3 Terabits of always-on performance – while enabling full use of all Switches and links across the network.
A comprehensive suite of Layer 3 Routing protocols helps ensure that the ERS 5000 Series can be a truly effective Core Switch for the smaller network. IPv4 has been a long-standing feature and the latest release introduces support for IPv6 with Static Routes, Auto-Address Assignment, and IPv4/ IPv6 Tunnelling. IP Multicast support has been enhanced with PIM-SM capability extended to a Stacked configuration, and full IGMPv3 support.
Convergence-ready capabilities Power-over-Ethernet
The ERS 5520-24T-PWR, 5520-48T-PWR, 5650TD-PWR and 5698TFD-PWR models provide Standards-based PoE and are designed to power devices such as IP Phones, Wireless Access Points, networked CCTV cameras, security and lighting devices, and access control devices such as badge readers. Full interoperability with all Standards-based equipment means these Switches have the flexibility to power devices from any vendors; ERS 5000 Switches can supply up to 15.4 watts per port, as defined in the IEEE 802.3af Standard.
Link Layer Discovery Protocol and Auto Detection/Auto Configuration
The ERS 5000 Series combines the functionality of the Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) and Auto Detection/ Auto Configuration (ADAC) to detect and configure IP Phones. The implementation includes the Location Type-Length-Value (TLV) which provides a mechanism to enable Emergency Location Services for IP Phones (for example, ‘Enhanced 911’).
Auto-discovery is extended with Media Endpoint Discovery (LLDP-MED) to automatically perform power and VLAN assignments for enabled devices. Avaya further extends the use of this protocol by coupling it with the ability to automatically configure Quality-of-Service (QoS) settings and VLAN membership when an IP Phone is detected. This can help to ensure fast and easy IP Phone deployments across the network.
With Automatic QoS, an ERS 5000 Series Switch supporting a Unified Communications solution automatically recognizes the special, private Differentiated Service Code Point (DSCP) values configurable for these applications, and optimizes the management of egress queues. Dynamic and Granular QoS
The ERS 5000 Series features advanced ASIC designs enabling fined-grained control of the QoS Egress Queues. This has benefits in deployments where changes to queue settings need to be made in order to optimize how the network supports specific application behavior. Being able to make on-the-fly changes to queue management, without the need for a reset, dramatically enhances the practical effectiveness of the network. And ERS 5600 models further extend these capabilities by supporting granular Egress Queue Shaping, in addition to shaping at the port level.
Resilient operations – redundant power and auto-unit replacement
Field-replaceable Power Supplies
The ERS 5600 models support integrated AC or DC power supplies for improved redundancy and uptime. The 5632FD and 5650TD models support two and ERS 5698TFD models support three integrated, field-replaceable supplies. This power supply design offers not only N+1 power redundancy and/or supplementary PoE power, but also provides savings in valuable rack space and reduction in overall system, servicing and sparing costs.
The ERS 5500 models support the external redundant power supply 15 solution, providing a similar capability for power redundancy and/or supplementary PoE power, although requiring additional real estate within the rack.
Automatic Unit Replacement
The Ethernet Routing Switch 5000 Series supports Automatic Unit Replacement (AUR), a virtual hot-swap functionality that allows engineers to quickly and easily replace failed units in the Stack. When a unit is replaced, the configuration and software image are automati¬cally synchronized with that saved by the Stack base unit for the failed Switch. This minimizes manual intervention as well as any interruption to neighboring users within the Stack.
The ERS 5000 Series also supports the ability to load a software image into the base unit of the Stack and have it automatically propagated to other Switches in the Stack; this further simplifies Stack management.
Security for safeguarding the network
Protecting the network against both external and increasingly prevalent internal attacks is a critical part of every IT manager’s job. The ability to do this requires simple-to-manage, yet intelligent context-aware security solutions that not only look at the identity of the person logging in, but also at the device connecting into the network. This network access control approach helps to ensure that only authorized individuals and properly scanned/secured devices are allowed to join the network.
Comprehensive & flexible Access Control
Through use of IEEE’s 802.1X-based EAP, a device’s MAC Address, or via login credentials a Network Manager can determine which users will be granted access to specified resources. The ERS 5000 Series can also be used in conjunction with Avaya’s innovative Identity Engines portfolio solution for advanced, Standards-based, policy-based and centralized authentication.
Network access control through 802.1X-based authentication
The ERS 5000 Series fully supports the IEEE 802.1X Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP)-based security a features, which control access to the network based on User credentials. A User is required to ‘login’ to the network using a username/ password, and a database is maintained on a centralized authentication server, for example RADIUS, which can itself proxy to other directory services such as LDAP and Active Directory. The ERS 5000 Series supports Single- and Multi-Host options, with numerous functionality extensions such as Guest VLAN, Non-EAP, Last RADIUS-assigned VLAN, Fail-Open VLAN, VLAN Names, and the new MultiVLAN option; delivering a highly versatile and readily-deployable solution.
The ERS 5000 Series also supports MAC Address-based security, which allows authentication of all access devices; network access is granted or denied via specific MAC Address identification. The ERS 5000 Series also supports a Guest VLAN capability.
Additionally, for Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) deployments where the PC connects to network through a VoIP handset, both the PC and the IP device are authenticated individually.
Directed attack protection
The ERS 5000 Series supports a set of security features designed to help protect against directed attacks. These include Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) Snooping, Dynamic Address Resolution Protocol Inspection, IP Source Guard and IGMP Snooping. Together, these help to protect against the most common snooping and man-in-the middle attacks that might otherwise compromise the network.
A Stack of ERS 5000 Switches can be managed as a single entity through one IP Address, simplifying network management.
The ERS 5000 Series offers the highest level of secure management with features including Secure Shell (SSH), IP Manager Lists, RADIUS and TACACS+ Authentication, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMPv3), and Secure Network Access.
Dual image support
The ERS 5000 Series supports dual agent images. This allows an administrator to download a newer image to the Switch/ Stack, and specify when the unit should reboot to take the new image, and even after a new image is installed and running, the administrator still has the ability to ‘roll back’ to the previous image.
The ERS 5000 Series supports either IPv4 or IPv6-based management. Simply select whether the Switch/Stack should be managed via IPv4 or IPv6, enter the Switch/Stack IP Address in the correct format, and the appropriate management paradigm becomes operational.
Many-to-many port mirroring
The new ERS 5600 models introduce support for many-to-many port mirroring to address enhanced control and visibility in complex, converged networks. This feature provides the ability to have multiple instances (up to four) of many-to-one port mirroring, and flows to be captured simultaneously to traffic analyzers, call recorders, IDS/IPS devices, etc.
Advanced management features
BootP and TFTP support allows centralized Switch IP Address assignment, software upgrades and SNMP agent updates over the network. The RADIUS-based security feature authenticates local console and TELNET logins.

Routed SMLT provides rapid failover for networks that are using dynamic Layer 3 routing protocols, is not dependent on the routing protocol used, and IP Gateway redundancy is achieved by synchronizing forwarding information between Switch CPUs.
Redundant & resilient chassis-based solution
As a stand-alone device, ERS 8300 provides an extremely robust platform for resilient networking. The system supports dual redundant Switch Fabric/CPU modules, N+1 AC or Dual-Input DC power supplies, and hot-swappable modules and fan trays.
Real-time applications are sensitive to variable performance and are relatively bandwidth-intensive. Performance is closely linked to reliability with many of the design options for today’s networks being a trade-off between performance needs and reliability requirements. Avaya’s ERS 8300 eliminates the need to choose one over the other by delivering high-speed, low-latency performance with superior reliability.
At the heart of the ERS 8300, there is a passive backplane design and a distributed forwarding architecture that leverages the advantages of dual N-1, active-active Switch Fabrics. The 720Gbps Crossbar and the 8394SF Switch Fabric module deliver up to 464Gbps of genuine data throughput and 345Mpps of frame forwarding performance per Switch. Putting these figures into a business context, an ERS 8300 Core Switch Cluster can transport more than 60,000 average-sized office files per second, and still not be subject to contention.
The ERS 8300’s Quality-of-Service (QoS) features only allow more efficient use of bandwidth to optimize existing network resources and capabilities, and also provide packet classification and marking at the Edge simplifies the QoS solution at the Core. By classifying, prioritizing, policing and marking LAN traffic, networks can deliver the right service levels for mission-critical and quality-sensitive applications. The ERS 8300 provides eight queues per port and advanced QoS features support the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Differentiated Services (DiffServ) QoS architecture standard — packet classification based on the contents of the IP Packet Header fields (e.g., voice, video and data).
Avaya Automatic QoS
With Avaya Automatic QoS is enabled, an ERS 8300 supporting an Avaya Unified Communications solution automatically recognizes the special, private Differentiated Service Code Point (DSCP) values used by these applications, and optimizes the management Egress Queues. Without this automated functionality, operators would need to have detailed knowledge of how QoS works, and also the private DSCP values, to enable manual configuration for optimized Queue usage. With this feature, the process is automated and optimized, and protects against mis-configuration. The introduction of Avaya Automatic QoS support on the ERS 8300 will see the core functionality delivered first, followed by access functionality in a subsequent release.

Traffic Policing & Shaping
Traffic Policing enables the provisioning of different service levels by limiting traffic throughput at the ingress (inbound) port of the ERS 8300. This feature allows limits to be placed upon the amount of bandwidth that particular users or applications can push into the network. An associated capability, Custom Auto-Negotiation Advertisements (CANA), allows for only specified connection rates to be advertised by auto-negotiation, and therefore limits low-priority devices to the appropriate connection speed.
Traffic Shaping offers the ability to limit traffic on egress (outbound) from the ERS 8300, typically to comply with some form of service tariff. Enterprises working with Service Providers or Carriers can use this feature when they deploy Ethernet as an alternative to traditional Frame Relay or ATM WAN access solutions.
IP Filtering & Deep Packet Pattern Matching
IP Filters can be used to manage traffic and provide security, by allowing that specific actions are performed when defined criteria are matched. Only data that matches the pattern is allowed to pass through the filter, and these filters can be used to set traffic priority, drop or allow IP packets, as well as define the conditions for mirroring traffic (e.g., IP Telephony in a Contact Center environment).
Deep Packet Pattern Matching is an advanced implementation of filtering that allows operators to match fields deep within the packet by specifying both an offset and a value to match.
Convergence and Unified Communications
The reality of today’s networks is that different applications must be given the quality of service appropriate to their differing needs and requirements. The ERS 8300 facilitates enterprises’ transition to convergence-based applications by implementing key enabling technologies while minimizing capital and operational costs.
Many enterprises are looking to transition from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet as the default for desktop connectivity. Gigabit Ethernet offers an alternative that is more strategic; as PCs gain more performance and efficiency, there is opportunity to exploit that zone between 100Mbps and 1Gbps. The ERS 8300 enables a seamless transition to Gigabit Ethernet by offering equivalent high-density 10/100 and 10/100/1000 modules that can readily co-exist in the same system.
Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is increasingly becoming the default solution for connectivity for the converged desktop, often in combination with Gigabit Ethernet. The ERS 8300 supports the deployment of IP Telephony, Wireless LAN, and any third-party line-powered device by offering standards-based PoE support on both 10/100 and 10/100/1000 interface modules.
Dynamic power management
To increase flexibility and see that the highest priority users and devices have service when they need it, ERS 8300 PoE Modules support an option to configure the priority level for power delivery. In the event that total available power is less then that generally required by the sum of all the devices, power will be dynamically — not statically — served on the basis of the configured priority level.
Device Auto Discovery
The ERS 8300 automatically recognizes the connection of an IP handset or other convergence device and immediately
provides power to it. The switch supports two schemes — Avaya’s Auto-Discovery & Auto- Configuration (ADAC) and Standards-based 802.1AB. This flexible capability eases the roll-out of convergence applications and devices, saving time and money.
Integrated access control security
Lapses or failures in network security can have a costly impact on the profitability of companies. Avaya has developed a multi-layered strategy for enhanced defense against threats from external and internal sources. The ERS 8300, a key element of this strategy, supports comprehensive security services for access control at the access layer.
802.1X/Extensible Authentication Protocol
Avaya’s commitment to open standards is proven with the Ethernet Switching portfolio’s support for IEEE 802.1X/Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) across the entire range of Access Switches. The ERS 8300 has comprehensive 802.1X/EAP support with additional enhancements such as:
• Multiple Hosts Multiple Authentications (MHMA)
• Multiple Hosts Single Authentication (MHSA)
• Guest VLAN
• Mixed EAP/Non-EAP
• Centralized MAC-based Authentication
These enhancements contribute to a readily deployable solution that’s compatible with all standards-compliant third-party 802.1X/ EAP products — providing enterprises with a means of effectively authenticating access to the network. Identity Engines is Avaya’s end-point security and policy compliance solution —inspecting and assessing, and thereby can ensure compliance to policy and enabling remediation at the network end point source, prior to full network access.
With Avaya, the enterprise is able to define acceptable criteria for the security software installed on PCs, test these criteria and confirm user credentials — all before the user is given any access to corporate servers and information. Any failures or inconsistencies during the check process can be resolved from the safety of a quarantined remediation VLAN, and guest users can be given access to an isolated VLAN (for example, Internet-only access). Assuming successful logon and checking, the user’s port is automatically assigned to the appropriate production VLAN, with the correct quality settings.
Enhanced usability & flexibility
With the network now needing to be closely aligned with the business — often subject to seasonal variations, or changes through merger and acquisition activity – the network needs to have great flexibility and the capability to adapt without impacting availability. The highly-versatile ERS 8300 includes a comprehensive set of features, which contribute to the most cost-effective solution for enterprises.
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP-Lite)
Large private IP networks can often have a requirement for sophisticated IP connectivity. This could be the need to support multiple connections to Internet Service Providers, or to satisfy a requirement to join a number of large internal routing domains and apply
The implementation of BGP-Lite on the ERS 8300 is intended to provide a sub-set of the full BGP capability, initially being a reduced scale implementation of iBGP. The feature will support up to four BGP Peers connections, and up to 8,000 BGP Routes. The BGP-Lite feature is classified as being part of the Advanced License feature set.
Equal Cost Multi-Path (ECMP)
The ERS 8300 now supports load sharing of Layer 3 traffic by configuring ECMP routing on up to four individual links. ECMP supports Static, and RIP and OSPF Routing protocols.
Multicast VLAN Registration (MVR)
Multicast VLAN Registration (MVR) is a feature that enables better support for wide-scale deployment of Multicast applications — client PCs remain in their separate VLANs whiles sharing access to common multicast streams.
Integrated Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR)
The ERS 8300 provides an integrated TDR to simplify troubleshooting of the physical copper cable plant, enabling operations to quickly identify faults, isolating the source of problems, and helping ensure maximum uptime of the network. This provides for remote and non-invasive diagnosis of cabling issues such as cable opens, cable shorts or impedance mismatch reporting. The ERS 8300 can detect and report these issues without the need to unplug cables or use expensive cable testers and additional personnel.
With the introduction of the tiered software license framework, Avaya enables customers to pay only for the functionality that meets their business needs. This avoids over-investing in unnecessary and unused software feature functionality, yet provides a seamless enhancement path and investment protection.
